In the last thirty-five years, some of China's policies have given Chinese women a new lease on life. Whether they have become corporate executives or storekeepers or have remained peasants, most women are still torn between their modern aspirations and a persistent, traditional status. With the discreet guidance of Nancy Cheng, a Shanghai scriptwriter, we witness some of the contradictions inherent in this situation.
