Biography

Torquato Joel (Souza PB 1957). Studied Communication/Journalism at UFPA (1981-1984). He participated in the Direct Cinema Atelier of the UFPB Documentary Center (NUDOC) and, in 1982 and 1986, completed internships in direct cinema at the Atelier de Réalisation Cinématographique - Varennes (Paris). During this period of training he carried out his two works in super eight. In 1986 he started working with 16 mm and in 1992, faced with the crisis in cinematographic production, he experimented with video support, making A Alma da Pedra, awarded at the Bahia International Cinema Day. Between 1992 and 1996 Torquato Joel worked as a screenwriter, assistant director and editor in various film productions in Paraíba. From 1996 onwards he made several short films in 35 mm, including Passadouro (1999), which was awarded best film at the Gramado festival, best documentary at the Recife Festival and best direction at the Brasília Festival.
